The MALTESE FALCON

Short film — Phantom City

This evening of CPFF’s Eyes on the Prize programme follows a rogue’s gallery of colourful criminal characters vying for an legendary, elusive statue, all through the eyes of the archetypal hard boiled private detective, Sam Spade. In both John Huston's classic film noir, The Maltese Falcon, and Toronto animator Patrick Jenkins' stylish Phantom City, the players in the game have various inscrutable motives and are determined to outwit the lead investigator and keep the prize for themselves. We could imagine no better pairing than Jenkins’ clever animated throwback to mid-century film noir for one of the primary narrative and stylistic examples of the genre.
