BEST IN SHOW

Short films — Bootwmn & Pottery Wars & Sink or Swim

CPFF’s Eyes on the Prize programme simply had to include the competition and chaos of Christopher Guest’s hilarious, pitch-perfect satire Best in Show. Far from being a mean-spirited mockery, the film reflects a genuine appreciation and affection for the insular world of dog shows and the quirky characters (and pets) that inhabit it. To give the Best in Show participants some admirable competition, we’ve chosen three similarly quirky shorts. All the way from Yellowknife, the quirky doc Pottery Wars turns a curious eye towards the highly competitive and strategic approach taken by locals to the annual artisanal pottery sale. Bootwmn sheds affectionate light on the charming story of Deana McGuffin, a third generation New Mexico bootmaker and proud lesbian who guides the filmmakers in creating a one-of-a-kind, LGBTQ-themed pair of cowboy boots. Together they enter a bootmaker competition, facing off against a horde of traditional – and almost exclusively straight male – Southern boot makers. Rounding out the evening, the playful sports satire Sink or Swim is the perfect faux-documentary pairing for Best in Show, depicting a synchronized swimming team at the fictional “Golden Cap Championship”.
